All Instagram Image Sizes at a Glance
Instagram is strict about image dimensions. Use the wrong size and your photo gets cropped, stretched, or blurred. Here are the exact sizes Instagram recommends in 2026:
| Format | Dimensions | Aspect Ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Post — Square | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 | Most common post format |
| Post — Portrait | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 | Takes most screen space in feed |
| Post — Landscape | 1080 × 566 px | 1.91:1 | Wide, cinematic look |
| Story & Reels | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 | Full screen vertical |
| Profile Photo | 320 × 320 px | 1:1 | Displayed as circle, min 110×110 |
| Carousel Slide | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 | Same as square post |
| IGTV Cover | 420 × 654 px | 1:1.55 | Portrait thumbnail |

The 4:5 portrait format (1080 × 1350 px) consistently gets the best reach because it takes up the most vertical space in the feed — giving you more screen real estate before a user scrolls past. If you're only going to use one format, make it portrait.
The 1:1 square (1080 × 1080 px) is the safest universal option. It looks great in the grid, works as a carousel slide, and doesn't get cropped anywhere.
Instagram Story & Reels Size
Stories and Reels both use 1080 × 1920 px (9:16). This is a full-screen vertical format. Instagram places interactive elements (links, stickers, polls) in the top and bottom 250 pixels, so keep important content in the middle 1080 × 1420 px safe zone.
If your original image is landscape (e.g. a 16:9 photo), use PixlFits's Smart Fill mode — it stretches your image to fill the full 9:16 canvas without any white bars.
Instagram Profile Photo Size
Instagram displays profile photos at 110 × 110 px on mobile, but stores them at 320 × 320 px. Always upload at 320×320 to avoid pixelation. Your photo is also cropped into a circle, so keep the main subject centered and away from the edges.
Instagram File Size Limits
Instagram accepts images up to 30 MB, but recommends keeping them under 8 MB for fastest upload. JPG format at 80–90% quality is the sweet spot. Use PixlFits's quality slider or Target File Size feature to hit under 8 MB without visible quality loss.
